Audience Research: Questionnaire Results + Analysis -

                                             Regional Magazine: Questionnaire Results -

                                                                 Q1 Analysis:

The graph shows that 38% of people will not buy a regional magazine, or a newspaper. With the regional magazine having the second highest vote, at 33% - I’d have to say that the result is quite surprising, because I expected the votes for the regional magazine to be much lower.

To summarize these results into short words – I was expecting that most people would probably choose option ‘C’ or ‘B’ – but these results show something different, it shows that there is a gap in the target market – meaning there is a chance for a brand of regional  (possibly mine) magazines to become something more popular, accepted. This result shows that there is an opportunity, for magazine designers to completely re-think the concept/conventions of how a regional magazine should be designed, and presented to the public.

The reason I say this is because the majority of people asked, (i.e. 70 participants) - ticked option ‘c’ which is ‘neither’ - that could mean that these people aren’t really sharing an interest in reading material, available before them – so my aim for this magazine could be, to make a magazine which features good content, interesting news etc.

Q2 Analysis:

This graph shows that over half of the percentage, 53%, said they have never read a regional magazine. I ought to mention that these people were aged between 17 – 25, looking at this result from a less analytical perspective is useful - because the result shows a significant amount of people who have read regional magazines in the past.

To summarize question two, the results tell me that people have read them, so what could I take note of from this result? I’d have to say that regional magazines do get noticed, and are in the public eye. So I have to keep in mind that there are people out there to that could be my potential target market. So my aims are; to make a good quality regional magazine for those people.

                                                                  Q3 Analysis:
This result shows that the majority of people, 54%, do like the way regional magazines retain a particular theme, and have a proclivity to focus on one or more topics (of similar nature). This is a good thing, because it shows that some people like to have content which delves into a topic in a through manner.

The second most significant result shows that people purchase regional magazines, to read in their free time. This 32% is important to me, because I may need to consider if I want to target them as well with my magazine.

Q4 Analysis:

This question presented a diverse range of topics themes/topics to have featured in regional magazines. The participants just needed to choose their favourite topic of interest.

The most favored topics shown on the graph are; travel magazines, food and restaurant review magazines, motoring magazines, and also society and culture magazines. I was expecting more people to choose ‘local news’ or ‘events’ – I assume you they weren’t chosen because they are already made available in many newspapers.

To summarise these results; I feel a bit puzzled because the topic with the highest amount of votes, was ‘travel’. I’m uncertain on whether I will choose this theme for my magazine, because it seems too broad of a topic for me to work on – but perhaps it can also be linked in with tourist sites in the Surrey area. I think I might set myself to work towards a society and culture magazine, or a travel/tourist magazine, similar to ‘Seattle’ magazine (shown in textual analysis).

Q5 Analysis:
This result shows that the majority of people, who like to read regional magazines, or any form of magazine – do care about how the magazine is presented to the readers – This means that the readers would certainly appreciate legible text, a creative layout, a neat and formal structure , easy to read information.

So my aim should be to please this target audience by trying to create a magazine, which is visually stimulating for the readers - and likewise user friendly and accessible.

Q6 Analysis:
This result was interesting, I made this question to try and understand whether the people were satisfied with a common regional magazine – in terms of the design and layout. And I didn’t expect that the majority would choose the second option, ‘no’ – on the questionnaire.

The people who ticked ‘yes’ for this question were a minority, but still quite a notable amount, I felt that there wasn’t much to be said with this option – because these people didn’t seem to mind how the regional magazines looked. So my interest was situated around the people who answered, ‘no’ for question six. Question seven should reveal some of the reasons for why the majority chose the second option (in question six).

Q7 Analysis:

With this result, the people felt that existing regional magazines could sometimes have an excessive amount of information on its pages – which causes them (reader) to feel put off, due to the amount of information present. This is just the minority, 44% of people choose option ‘a’.

Option ‘b’ however shows the majority, in this question – they agreed that most regional magazines look fine, and are to a reasonable extent – user friendly – but similar to the people in option ‘a’ – these people also agreed that there are some magazines, on the market shelves, which do look a little too cluttered.

Q8 Analysis:
The results for this question, 73% of people answered by choosing ‘yes’, this suggests that the majority of people who read regional magazines – do care about the photography in regional magazines. I think these people who chose option ‘a’ (yes) – are being quite attentive to this matter, because they want to feel that their purchase was worth the money that they’ve spent.

So what could I take from this result? Well a few things;

  • It shows me that most people do care about the design of a magazine, including photography
  • They want a good and sapid reading experience.
  • They do care about how they appear on the page.

So I have to keep in mind that the target audience needs to have a product in which they are satisfied with (referring to the quality of the magazine).

Q9 Analysis:
This question was asked to gain further understanding, on whether the public considers regional magazines to be worthwhile? I wanted to know where their opinions settled, with the three options.

The first option got the most votes – I think this can be explained, because people probably purchase regional magazines, for light hearted reasons or in a care free manner – So the price they are willing to pay depends upon how interested they are with the content of the magazine. The results seen as a whole shows a decrease in the number of votes as the price goes up for the magazine.

Q10 Analysis:
The majority of people (84%) said they don’t mind/or they aren’t really concerned about additional content being included with the magazine purchase. Even with this result, I can still consider adding in the more content with the magazine, just so the magazine could possibly appeal to more people.

The remaining 16% said they wanted additional content included with a regional magazine purchase - Even though they are the minority, they still can be counted as my target audience - so I may need to figure out how to appeal to both of these groups (during development).
